Every Saturday throughout the year, unless the heavens really open, the ordinarily residential Upper Gardner Street – parallel to the bustling Kensington Gardens – is transformed into Brighton’s most wonderful street market. Wandering down the market, open from 10-5, is our absolute favourite way to spend a Saturday, both in summer and winter.

The thing that makes this market so wonderful is that there really is something for everyone, and the stalls have different bargains every week. As well as a variety of hot and cold food and drinks, there are stalls selling jeans, vintage and handmade clothing, jewellery, old cameras, tools, books, toys, homeware, and general bric-a-brac.

Unlike a lot of street markets, you don’t have to turn up at the crack of dawn, but it’s good to get there by late morning if you want the best choice of fresh produce. As well as the Saturday market, Upper Gardner Street is home to the fantastic North Laine Antique and Flea Market, which is open six days a week.
